Cars are depreciating assets, no matter how you look at them, that is unless you own a rare model. In case you’re not into the classic hot rods or supercars, you can set your budget sites a little lower and aim for a Honda S2000 CR. Yes, they still exist, and here five reasons you should get one now.

It’s better than a regular S2000

For those not in the know, the Honda S2000 CR is the “club racer” version of Honda’s legendary roadster. The CR came with an OEM hardtop, a bigger spoiler and large front splitter for downforce, a quicker steering rack, a stiffer suspension, and stickier Bridgestone RE070 tires. Other modifications including black lug nuts, a spherical shift knob, and grippier cloth seats.

The high-revving 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood was the same, as was the slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

It’s rare

Honda planned on producing around 2,000 units when they built the S2000 CR, but in actuality, they only manufactured 699 of them between the 2008 and 2009 model years that it was out. As you could probably guess, many of those S2000 CRs were likely stolen, crashed or somehow salvaged over the years, so finding a clean one is harder than finding Waldo while under the influence of your favorite recreational substance.

It makes a good daily driver

Rare or not, we believe that cars are meant to be driven. Honda originally built the S2000 to be an enjoyable daily driver that can carve up the canyons and feel right at home on just about any road, and the S2000 CR is no different. It’s just a little more racecar-like. So if you do happen to find an S2000 CR that’s not in perfect mint condition, then drive it! Preferably on a race track or autocross course.

Pricing isn’t too outrageous

While there are pricing exceptions like the very cherry examples that happen to pop up on Bringatrailer.com from time to time, you can still find a decent S2000 CR for around the mid-$30,000 range right now. That’s not bad, considering it retailed for the mid-$30,000 range when it was new.

It’s reliable

If you do happen to find an S2000 CR that you don’t mind driving, the ultimate beauty is that it’s a Honda, underneath it all. Hondas are known to be reliable and the race-bred S2000 CR is no exception. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.

Just buy one now, if you can

We know that times are tough right now and finding a clean S2000 CR might be even tougher. But just know that if you can swing the $30,000-plus price tag that seems to be assigned to them right now, it could be worth it in the long run.

There’s no telling how much pricing might skyrocket in the near future, so it’s a great time to make a move. It’s hard to find a car that actually appreciates in value, but the Honda S2000 CR is definitely one of them.
